Here’s a figure I did for the end of year edition of The New Republic. They include some variation of an ampersand in each edition, and this time they wanted to go with a superhero themed one. The ampersand has been the symbol of TNR since it’s founding in 1914. So the challenge of the piece was to make a superheroine in 1914 inspired garb. I had no. Idea. What. To. Do. How do you combine elegant, but stuffy, 1914s female fashion with a superhero? It struck me, finally, to look into turn of the century circus performers for inspiration, as they would be wearing clothing that might most resemble a superhero. And here’s what I came up with! She’s sort of like a Wonder Woman-esque amazon with long mermaid locks. Let me know what ya think ;).
